Family guidelines
Last updated 13 October 2026
A family tree is shared by everyone in it — including people who never joined. These guidelines keep it kind, accurate and safe. By joining a family space you agree to follow them.
Be kind
Write about relatives the way you would want to be written about. No insults, no settling old scores, nothing meant to hurt. Family history has painful chapters; tell them with care.
Ask before you share about the living
Before adding details or stories about a living relative, ask them if you can. If they would rather not be in the tree, respect that: an admin can remove and forget them.
Leave out what is private
Do not add addresses, phone numbers, ID numbers, health details, religion or anything else that could put someone at risk, even in a story.
Facts and family stories
Add what you know, and say when you are not sure — an approximate year is better than an invented date. When relatives remember things differently, talk it through; every change is kept in the history and can be undone.
Share only what you may share
Only add photos and documents you have the right to share, and never photos of other people's children without their parents' agreement.
Admins look after the space
Admins decide who joins, can change roles, and can remove anything that breaks these guidelines. If something worries you, tell your family's admins first; if that does not help, write to us.
